Ipu He'ke (pronounced EE POO HAY KEY) is a hollow gourd with a top. In ancient times it was used as a percussion instrument. When struck on the ground it made a deep hollow sound. It was said that this was the sound of the earth giving of life or Ha. The rhythmic beat of the ipu he'ke usually accompanied chanting and the ancient hula.

Larger gourds, ipu nui, were used to store food and bigger objects, such as folded cloth or tapa. Ipu or the hollowed gourd, were a part of ancient legends, myths and rituals, and were worn by priests as masks during religious ceremonies.

Reproduction of the ipu he'ke, captured in ceramic imaging are adorned on this page with realistic color glazes of old. These hand-painted numbered series of ceramic ipu he'ke depict petroglyph of warrior or honu (turtle), mai'le lei or mai'le and pikake lei.

All pieces are original in design and are signed by the artist. A welcomed gift for any occasion, these ipu he'ke may be proudly displayed in your Polynesian collection or used as a vase.
